Cheap ski hire Châtel
In the Dranse valley, just a few minutes from the Swiss border and with around 30 working farms, Châtel is a hidden gem if you’re the kind of person that wants a down-to-earth holiday as well as the world-class skiing of the Portes du Soleil. The locals are remarkably friendly and unpretentious, and two main streets make it easily navigable.
The terrain here offers everything from nursery slopes to snow parks to half-pipes to death-defying mogul runs, and plenty of good tree runs in between. 650km of terrain across the Portes du Soleil area makes Châtel one of the best placed villages for skiing, but in fact Châtel goes beyond the Portes du Soleil with two separate sectors of slopes. One links to its French neighbour – high, purpose-built Avoriaz – and the other links to two resorts in Switzerland: Morgins (which is on the Portes du Soleil circuit) and Torgon (which is not on the circuit).
The comparatively low-key reputation of Châtel also keeps accommodation prices down. Though staying in the French Alps during ski season is never going to come cheap, the prices in Châtel are much more affordable than the larger, more fashionable resorts in the area like Morzine and Avoriaz. That’s even before your Ski Discount equipment hire has saved you up to 60%.
