Cheap ski hire Samoëns
Samoëns has grown and expanded recently but still retains plenty of old-school French charm. Known chiefly for its stonemasons, this listed village boasts medieval fountains, rustic old buildings and an ancient church. The centre of Samoëns is traffic free, and has a beautiful square dominated by a magnificent lime tree. There’s also the famous Samoëns botanical garden, the only one of its kind in the Alps, created in 1906 and with more than 5,000 plants.
Though not a party town by any means, Samoëns does have some robust après ski options, like the modern and sophisticated La Clarine, or the nightclub of Le King Club. For a more laid back way to unwind after the slopes, head to the authentic and pleasantly uncrowded Bar la Savoie. Excellent French food and traditional mountain treats like raclette and fondue can be found at Muscade et Basilic or La Table de Fifine, and Le Mode a l'Envers offers an excitingly diverse menu. For the self-caterer, the main street is a delight, full of gourmet shops offering mountain ham, local cheese and mouth-watering patisserie, and every Wednesday there is a wonderful market selling local produce.
For the beginner and intermediate, the skiing in Samoëns is ideal, and there's more than enough to satisfy the expert, including the Gers bowl, with an 800m-drop of untracked skiing. 80 per cent of the slopes are north facing, so hold the snow well, and the majority of the clientele is French. For those wanting to leave Samoëns for a bit and go further afield, The Grand Massif consists of five resorts – Flaine, Samoëns, Morillon, Sixt Fer à Cheval and Les Carroz d’Arâches – and offers 265km of piste.
Rent your equipment with SkiDiscount for savings up to 60%. Samoëns even has lockers at the top of the cable car to keep it in, so you’ll never have to be weighed down by your gear.
